Posterior Vaginal Wall Repair

Posterior Vaginal Wall Repair is a procedure indicated for the treatment of posterior vaginal wall prolapse  or we call rectocele (rectum bulges or herniates forward into the vagina) and defects of the perineum (area separating entrance of the vagina and anus).

It aims to correct defects in the rectovaginal fascia (in posterior vaginal wall)  separating rectum and vagina while allowing bowel function to be maintained or corrected without interfering with sexual function.

The cause of posterior vaginal wall prolapse or  a rectocele is a weakening of the pelvic support structures and thinning of the rectovaginal septum (in posterior vaginal wall).

Birth trauma such as multiple, difficult or prolonged deliveries, the use of forceps or other assisted methods of delivery, perineal tears, or an episiotomy into the rectum or anal sphincter muscles may increase the risk of a woman developing a posterior vaginal wall prolapse (rectocele).

A history of constipation and straining with bowel movements, or hysterectomy may contribute to the development of a posterior vaginal wall prolapse (rectocele).

These problems develop with age but they may occasionally occur in younger women or in those that have not delivered children.

Note and Precaution:

  • All Vaginal Surgeries are performed in our Operating Room under Intravenous (IV) sedation or General anesthesia by our board-certified anesthesiologist.
  • Reconstructive vaginal surgery is one of the most complex and meticulous surgeries. It requires extreme precision and accuracy to achieve optimum results.
  • Most surgeons have little or no experience with this type of cosmetic surgery, so patients need to be aware of their surgeon’s training and experience.
