Risks and Complications of VaginoplastyRisks and Complications of Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Wall Repair, Pain at/or around the surgical wound may be felt as soon as the anesthetic wears off, which is relieved by pain medications prescribed. You should refrain from working because it may cause bruising. In case of swelling and severe pain in the surgical area, please come to see Dr. Vitasna.

Occasionally, you may experience swelling, itchiness, irritation or tightness around the surgical wound, which will completely heal in 4-6 weeks.

A few days after the surgery, you may experience an urge to pass stool (straining), and a sense of incomplete emptying. This is caused by the sutured posterior vaginal wall between rectum and vagina. Taking a rest is recommended to reduce this symptom. Laxatives will be given to prevent constipation.

1) Complications of Vaginoplasty, because of difficulty in urination after the surgery

  • Urinary frequency or difficulty in urination may be noted a few days after the surgery due to the tightening of the vaginal muscles immediately after surgery. It is expected to gradually disappear after the vaginal muscles have started to loosen up a bit. Some women less than 1%, may experience the difficulty in urination and may be catheterized for 2-3 days to prevent cystitis.
  • Some women may subsequently experience the difficulty in urination after back home. If so, please contact the Hospital to ask for advice, or please come to see Dr. Vitasna for the treatment.

2) Abnormal bleeding after the Vaginoplasty or Posterior Vaginal Wall Repair 

  • Abnormal bleeding is very seldom noted and occurs with less than 1 % of the surgeries . Aspirin and other anti-coagulant drugs should be avoided at least 10-15 days before and after the scheduled surgery.
  • If excessive bleeding from the surgical wound occurs after the surgery, all expenses will no longer be charged to you. However, if the complications occur due to your non-compliance with the doctor’s orders, you will be charged accordingly.

3) Complications of Vaginoplasty, because of abnormal vaginal discharge after the surgery

  • You may experience abnormal vaginal discharge, a green-yellowish discharge, after the surgery, because the vagina is full of secretion fluid and various kinds of bacteria. This can cause reaction to the surgical wound and sutures. Complete absorption of the sutures will usually occur within 6-8 weeks. Green-yellowish discharge may also persist during this time.
  • You may experience itching or curd like discharge as a result of vaginal fungi. In case of vaginal fungal infection, you have to take oral anti-fungal medication or suppository.

4) Inflammation or infection after the Vaginoplasty 

  • Infection of the wound may occur because the surgical wound is in the vaginal opening area. It is constantly being prone to contamination with fluid from the vaginal tract, urinary tract, and alimentary (fecal) tract.
  • Mostly the infection after the surgery may happen to any women who fail to follow the post operative instructions. The women,who have existing diseases such as diabetes, or have vaginal infection before the surgery.
  • During the inflammatory phase of healing, which last up to 2-4 weeks after the surgery, sloughing off of tissues or necrosis can be observed. This should not be a cause of worry, because it may happen in a process of healing of the surgical wound at the perineum area.

5) Complications of Vaginoplasty, because of leakage (Fistula) between vagina and neighboring organs after the surgery

  • Leakage (Fistula) between or rectum and vagina is theoretically considered a rare complication. In this respect, if you have some vaginal body fluid with feces-like smell, please inform Dr. Vitasna immediately for prompt diagnosis and treatment of such symptom.

6) Unsatisfactory results after the Vaginoplasty

  • This surgery has limitations and cannot absolutely ensure results and satisfaction. The surgery may result in incomplete tightening of your entire vagina depending on your former anatomical structure. In case of unsatisfactory results, correction surgery may be performed as appropriate and possible. In this respect, you and the physician should come to discuss for the solution together.
  • If correction surgery wound occurs from the complication of the surgery, all expenses for services and treatment will no longer be charged to you. However, if the unsatisfactory results occur due to the complication from your non-compliance with the doctor’s orders, you will be charged accordingly.
